People are always asking me what it's like being a wedding/event planner. Every time I hear the question, I look up and wonder what I should say back. Hmm... What is it like to be a wedding/event planner?
You want my honest answer? Here goes... Being a wedding/event planner is one of the most challenging, emotionally draining, time consuming, but yet rewarding and exhilarating experiences. "I love the opportunity to get to know new people and I love seeing new faces." I love getting clients who are looking for full service planning because that means I get to be with them from beginning to the end, literally. (LOL) I mean I help with everything from setting a date to saying "Yes to the dress!" I help in drafting their budget, picking out a venue, and (with weddings) picking their wedding party, sometimes. I am with my clients during dress and tux fittings. I set up catering and cake tastings. When planning weddings, I help my brides pick out decorations, flower arrangements, and sometimes even china patterns to add to their wedding registry. I make sure my clients maintain their sanity and help with preserving their emotional stability through the entire planning process. I enjoy setting up hair, makeup and skin care trials for clients. I even workout with my brides and yes sometimes I accompany them at the gym. "I mean, what bride doesn't want to look amazing in her wedding gown?" As much as I hate doing diets, one time I started a diet plan with one of my lovely brides. She wanted to lose maybe 5 pounds because to her she was too fat. (Her words) Even though I thought she looked amazing, I joined in with her. I say all of this to say... Being a wedding/event planner is NOT just about planning a wedding/event. Yes, I do plan the weddings and events, but I am building lifelong relationships with each and every client. I become a friend of their family and they become a friend in mine. So as you can see... "I LOVE WHAT I DO!" NO, it's not always "Peaches and Cream", there are highs and lows to being a wedding and event planner. However, the joy I get from seeing the happiness in others is what keeps me planning and ultimately makes me happy in the end. So what is it like being a Planner? For me, it's like Christmas. I get to give the gift of laughter, joy and memories that last a lifetime. ~Shayla Sutton Owner | Creative Director of Weddings & Events
